Anti limescale filters
The different filters on the market !
In order to be able to see more clearly, we are going to study the different filtration systems, the purpose of these devices and those that only exist in the imagination of some. A rethink is necessary for those who do not tell us everything for the sole purpose of boasting and selling their junk!!!
For example, we could define magnetic anti-limescale systems as filters when they only work with a magnetic field. We will speak clearly here about the physical anti-limescale filters through which water passes materially.
The filter is a system whose objective is to separate the elements contained in a flow. The filter will act by retaining, deleting, redirecting undesirable elements, letting only the desired elements pass freely.
It is therefore not really possible to consider that a magnetic or electronic anti-limestone is strictly speaking a filter.
The different types of filters :
Reverse osmosis, filter or not?
Even if the osmosis unit is equipped with a microporous membrane that will need to be changed, it is above all the water itself that will evacuate the unwanted elements to the sewer! (about 4 liters of rejected water to obtain 1 liter of purified water !!! ) This system consumes a lot of water !!!
So we can't really classify this one as a limescale filter. Its action is to remove the most infinitely small particles contained in the water, to purify it by obtaining almost demineralised, impoverished and neutral water. This water will have lost all the virtues, both positive and negative, that its components could have conferred on it. It will no longer contain limestone either.
It is a very specific system, more used in laboratories, aquariums... or to obtain a water without any active substance. For these reasons it will be a process more suitable for those who are looking for a very pure water for drinking or cooking.
We will devote a specific article to advice on its use.
NB: It is a system invented in 1854 by Thomas Graham for dialysis. More widely developed later for water desalination and by NASA to be able to reuse waste water in orbit !!!
Cartridge filter and anti-limescale filter
- a box with a water inlet and outlet
- a kind of transparent or opaque jar attached to the housing, in which a filtering material is placed
- depending on the manufacturing process, a purging system
The water will be forced to pass through the filter cartridge to change its characteristics.
There are different types of cartridges of which the most common are :
- kdf: to treat bactericides, fungicides and algicides and to prolong the effectiveness of activated carbon
- activated carbon: for filtering organic matter or heavy metals
- wound: type of textile yarn wound to filter out larger particles up to 20 microns.
- polyphosphate crystals: to prevent the crystallization of minerals in water, especially limestone
The one we are interested in for our article topic is therefore the polyphosphate crystal filter.
Polyphosphates Sometimes referred to as "known safe at dietary levels" or below the ADI (acceptable daily intake) The latter would be tolerated even in higher quantities in young people and adolescents.
Other sources, however, report it as a product that interferes with digestion. To be consumed very moderately or to be avoided. Polyphosphates cause digestive problems by blocking many enzymes.
In regular or high doses: many metabolic dysfunctions are possible because phosphates play an important role in the general metabolism.
Its action would be disruptive on the relationship between calcium and phosphorus in the body, between calcium and magnesium (osteoporosis), on the assimilation of minerals, calcium, magnesium and iron, possibility of decalcification.
Phosphates are also suspected of causing hyperactivity in children.
If they are necessary for the growth of children and the proper functioning of the body, they lead, when they are in excess, to serious behavioural problems.
Conclusion on the polyphosphate filter
This type of filter will therefore be strongly discouraged for family and domestic use. It can, however, be used on a heating circuit to help remove clogging.
