Quickly find the right solution for your water
Filtering all the water in your home, improving drinking water, treating rainwater or borehole water, or choosing the right filter cartridges: the best solution depends above all on your needs and the source of your water. This guide helps you compare the main options and find the most suitable treatment.
Different water filtration and purification solutions for the home
Start with your actual need
There is no single filter suitable for every situation. The first question is simple: do you want to filter and protect the whole house, mainly improve your drinking water, treat water from a non-mains source, or choose cartridges for a system that is already installed?

What do you need?

Whole house
I want to filter all the water in my home
Do you want to retain sand, mud, rust or other particles in the water and protect your plumbing, equipment and appliances? Discover the different filter types, filter housings and configurations suitable for domestic installations.
Drinking water
I want to purify the water I drink
Taste, odours, chlorine or finer filtration: a purifier installed under the sink mainly treats the water used for drinking and cooking. Compare activated carbon, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and solutions with or without a dedicated drinking-water tap.
Non-mains water
I want to filter rainwater, spring, borehole or well water
Water from a non-mains source requires a different approach. Pre-filtration, sediment filtration, activated carbon, specialist treatment and UV disinfection can be combined according to the water quality, its source and the results of a water analysis.
Cartridges & maintenance
I need to choose or replace my filter cartridges
Sediment, carbon block, granular activated carbon, specialist cartridges, 9 3/4 or 10 inch: find out how to choose the right cartridges, understand filtration ratings, check compatibility, determine the installation order and know when to replace them.

Filtering or purifying water: what is the difference?

Filtering water for the whole house
A whole-house filtration system is generally installed on the main water supply entering the property. It mainly helps retain particles and may combine different media, for example sediment and activated carbon cartridges.
Purifying drinking water
A water purifier is mainly intended to improve drinking water at the point of use, generally under the kitchen sink. Depending on the technology, it may use activated carbon, an ultrafiltration membrane or a reverse-osmosis membrane.
Several solutions can complement each other
You do not necessarily have to choose between whole-house filtration and drinking-water purification. A home can have a filtration system on the incoming supply to protect the entire installation, followed by an under-sink purifier for finer treatment of water used for drinking and cooking.

What if the main problem is limescale?

Filtering water and treating limescale are two different needs
Water filtration and limescale treatment have different objectives. If your main concern is white marks, scale deposits or scaling of appliances and pipework, refer instead to the Treat limescale section to choose a suitable anti-limescale solution.

Well, borehole or spring water: analysis is the first step

For water from a non-mains source, the choice of treatment should not be based only on its appearance or taste. A water analysis identifies the parameters that need to be treated and helps adapt the filtration, specialist media and, where necessary, UV disinfection.

FAQ – Which water filtration system should you choose?

What is the difference between filtering and purifying water?
Whole-house filtration mainly aims to retain particles and protect the installation. Drinking-water purification generally uses complementary or finer technologies at the point of use, for example under the sink.
Can several filtration systems be combined?
Yes. A system can combine a whole-house filter on the incoming supply with an under-sink purifier dedicated to drinking water. The different systems then perform complementary functions.
Which filter should I choose to retain particles throughout the home?
Whole-house filtration generally uses a sediment cartridge suited to the required flow rate. Depending on the needs, it can be complemented by activated carbon or a specialist treatment cartridge.
Should well or borehole water be analysed before choosing a filter?
Yes. For well, borehole, spring or other non-mains water, an analysis identifies the parameters that need treatment and helps define a more suitable filtration and treatment chain.
Does a water filter also treat limescale?
Not necessarily. Sediment and activated-carbon cartridges do not perform the same function as an anti-limescale treatment. If limescale is the main issue, a dedicated solution is required.
Can I filter the whole house and purify only the drinking water?
Yes. This is a logical combination when both needs exist: whole-house filtration protects the installation, while an under-sink purifier provides complementary treatment for drinking and cooking water.
What should I choose if limescale is my main problem?
If your priority is to limit scale deposits, white marks and scaling of appliances, you should consider a dedicated anti-limescale solution. Conventional sediment or activated-carbon filtration does not replace limescale treatment.
I already have a filter housing: how do I choose compatible cartridges?
Check the cartridge size accepted by the housing, the required function, the filtration rating and the necessary flow rate. The cartridge guide also explains 9 3/4, 10-inch and 20-inch formats and the main families of filter media.
